Nafakhum Waterfall – The Niagara of Bangladesh

Location: Situated in Remakri, Thanchi upazila of Bandarban district, Nafakhum is one of the largest waterfalls in Bangladesh.

Height & Flow:

  • The waterfall is about 25–30 feet high, but its width and strong water flow make it special.
  • In the rainy season, the roar of Nafakhum can be heard from far away, earning it the nickname “Niagara of Bangladesh.”

Journey & Adventure:

  • To reach Nafakhum, travelers must first get to Thanchi (around 79 km from Bandarban town).
  • From there, a thrilling 3–4 hour boat ride on the Sangu River takes you to Remakri.
  • After the boat ride, a 1.5–2 hour trek through hills, forests, and tribal villages leads to the waterfall.
  • The entire journey is filled with breathtaking views of green hills, river bends, and untouched nature.

Special Features:

  • The word “Nafa” means fish in the local Marma language, as schools of fish can often be seen jumping near the falls.
  • Crystal-clear water, thunderous sound, and misty surroundings make it a paradise for adventure seekers.
  • Ideal for trekking, nature photography, and experiencing raw wilderness.

Best Time to Visit:

  • September to November (post-monsoon): Water flow is strong, and trekking is safer.
  • Monsoon season (June–August) makes the journey dangerous due to heavy currents.
  • Winter (December–February) is also good for trekking, but the water flow decreases.

Travel Tips:

  • Wear sturdy trekking shoes.
  • Carry light luggage, water, and dry food.
  • Always go with a local guide for safety.
  • Mobile network coverage is very weak in the area.
